Crop Explorer

Where California's food is grown, one crop at a time.

A free tool for finding the counties, growing regions, irrigation districts, and groundwater agencies behind each California crop, built from the state's public county crop reports and field maps.

Almost every county in California reports what it grows each year: the acres harvested, what the crop was worth, and how much was produced. Put those reports side by side and a map appears. Almonds and pistachios belong to the San Joaquin Valley, lettuce and strawberries to the Central Coast, rice to the Sacramento Valley, dates and winter vegetables to the desert, wine grapes to the North Coast and the Bay Area.

Pick a crop to see its map, its leading counties and regions, how much water it takes, how many servings it yields, and where it sits on the ground: the irrigation districts, the water agencies, and the groundwater agencies with the crop inside their boundaries. Every district links to its own page in the District Explorer.
