Water Projects Explorer

The two water projects, contract by contract.

A tool for following California's two big water projects, the federal Central Valley Project and the State Water Project: who holds contracts with each, in which division or service area, under which allocation class, what each class was allocated every year, and how reliable each class has been over twenty years.

Most of the surface water that moves through the Central Valley and on to the coast and Southern California travels through one of these two projects. Each project announces, every year, the share of each contract it expects to deliver. Those percentages decide how much water a district can plan on, which fields get planted, and how hard the groundwater basins are pumped.

Pick a project to see the current year's allocations, the twenty-year history of every allocation class against the water year type, how often each class received and took its full contract, and the directory of contractors. Every contractor that is a district in the registry links to its own page in the District Explorer.

In development The Colorado River is the third project. Its page is being built; until it opens, Colorado River contracts appear on the district pages of the agencies that hold them.
